When you order from ChokeSports.com, your gear ships directly from Japan with duties and taxes unpaid. U.S. Customs determines any applicable import fees when the package enters the country. These fees depend largely on the country of origin of the products you purchase.
🇯🇵 Made in Japan: usually 12.5% to 15%
Most ChokeSports products are made in Japan. Since July 24, 2026, the US charges Japan-made goods a combined 12.5%, covering the standard duty and the added tariff together. If an item's standard duty is already above 12.5%, it pays that standard rate and nothing is added. That puts most of our Japan-made gear, such as belts, gis, gloves and head guards, between 12.5% and 15%. Apparel carries higher standard rates.
🌏 Products Made in Other Countries
Selected items are made in China, Taiwan, Vietnam or Pakistan. Each country follows its own US rules. China-made items usually cost the most to import, and China-made apparel often lands between about 30% and 45%. Items from Pakistan, Vietnam or Taiwan can land close to the Japan rate, and sometimes below it. See the examples on our Duties & Taxes page.
🧾 Mixed-Origin Orders (Japan + Other Countries)
If your order includes products made in different countries — for example, one item made in Japan and another made in China — U.S. Customs will assess tariffs separately for each item based on its declared origin and HS code.
A higher tariff on one item does not affect other items in the same shipment, as long as the origin is clearly declared on the invoice.
🏷️ How to Identify Made in Japan Products
Made in Japan items are easily identified on our website by a golden badge displayed on the product page. If a product does not have this badge, it is made elsewhere — and you can find the exact country of origin in the Product Specs tab on every product page.
📦 Why This Matters Now
As of August 29, 2025, the U.S. removed the de minimis exemption that previously allowed orders under USD 800 to enter duty-free — all imports are now reviewed by U.S. Customs regardless of value.
As of July 24, 2026, a new US tariff took effect on imports from many countries, including Japan and China. For Japan-made goods, the standard duty and the new tariff combined come to 12.5%, or the standard duty alone if it is higher. This replaced a temporary 10% surcharge that had applied since February 2026. Rates can change with little notice, so treat these figures as a snapshot, not a quote.
